Art of Identifying and Germinating Seeds

By Phil Caxton

Many of the plants and shrubs too can be easily grown from their seeds. Plants like Berries and other fruits can be easily grown from their seeds. You can never match the fun and the pleasure that can be obtained from plucking and eating the berries that have grown in your gardens. One must be aware of the fact some seeds germinate faster and also grow faster and some take a longer time.

These days apart from the original seeds one can also fine seeds that are genetically altered or hybrid in nature. These seeds and plants thereafter grow very fast and also bear fruits much faster than if you had tried the original seed. You can sow the seeds in small seed boxes or even pots that are filled with the composts required for the nutrition of the plants.

Tips for growing seeds The following are some tips that you can follow in order that your seeds germinate and grow well:

You must be very careful to drain the boxes of the container in which you are placing the seeds for germination. This can be done by putting a layer of rocks on the bottom of the container.

After sowing the seeds you need to cover them to a required level with compost. The compost needs to be very fine. Then after that you need to place the container in a place that is not exposed to heat. It is best if you keep it in a cool place and preferably in an unheated seed house also called a green house.

Remember to water the pots well especially in the early stages or there are dangers of the new plant drying up. Also the soil could dry up and prevent the seeds from germinating.

In order to speed up germination you need to place the seeds in a tin. Make tiny holes on the lid of the tin to let the air pass in to it. Then layer it up with compost and soil. After this you need to bury the tin in the ground for the winter. This is one way of stratification that quickens the germination.

Always stratify the seeds in the whole if the winter before you sow them. This process needs to be followed in the case of seeds of fleshy berries and fruits. This is because these seeds have a hard outer covering that needs to be softened. Once you have carefully followed the above mentioned steps then your plants will grow. Once your plants have grown considerably then they can be transplanted to another box or pot that is bigger and gives enough room and space for the plant to grow.

How are Flowers Produced?

By Adriana Noton

As one of nature's most beautiful gifts, flowers grow in different types of climates and regions. The type of flower that flourishes in a specific region will depend on the climate and soil. There are different types of flowers with different lifecycles. Annual flowers are plants that complete their lifecycle in one season and biennial flowers take two years to complete there lifecycle. Flowers grow from seed germination to a mature plant that produces seeds. Monocots and Dicots are the two main classes of flowering plants.

For flower enthusiasts, how the seed becomes a mature plant is a helpful and informative story. The dicot class of plant seeds has two leaves in the plant embryo while the monocot seeds have one seed leaf. The plant embryo is very small and it is usually tricky to see where the stem ends and the root begins. There is an egg-shaped ovule within the ovary. The ovule is the part that develops into a seed. The embryonic root is called the radicle. The seed leaves contain food storage organs called cotyledons. The embryonic shoot is called the plumule. Depending on the environment where the particular plant lives, the outer layer will stop growing when the embryonic shoot (plumule) and embryonic root (radicle) over take the seed's protective parts. Note that it doesn't matter where the flower comes from - whether it be Newmarket flowers, or even Richmond hill flowers, the flower plant embryos do have these parts.

Germination is the period when the plant embryo begins to grow. There can be either external or internal influences that will cause a plant embryo to begin to develop. For instance, some seeds can be prompted to grow by manually cracking the seed coat. In the environment, freezing and thawing can cause a seed to crack open. As well, giving the seed water will cause it to absorb the water which decreases oxygen and thereby decreases anaerobic respiration. This decrease will cause the seed coat to crack which allows oxygen to enter the embryo. A fresh supply of oxygen with the water helps to fuel enzyme activity and this causes the seed to start developing. As well, in some plants, the warming temperatures and sunlight are needed to stimulate the process of germination.

Some flowers are produced as single plants while other flowers are produced in clusters. The clusters are referred to as inflorescences, which are one peduncle with a number of small stalks called pedicels, supporting individual flowers. There are a number of different ways that plant seeds spread to different growing spots. The wind can pick up and transport lightweight seeds for many miles. Birds are known for getting seeds stuck in their feet and carrying and releasing them in another area. As well, ants pick up and carry seeds to different areas, and bees are well known pollinators.

When one produces flowers at home by mechanical means, it is important to try to match the natural environment as much as possible. Every flower garden enthusiast knows the pleasure of growing flowers and how pleasing they are to the eye. Knowledge of the plant's development will help when growing beautiful and stunning flowers in a garden or in the home.

Enjoy A Beautiful, Productive Garden Even in the Winter

By Pat Lowe

Garden plants can boost your mood all year round with carefully chosen colors and varieties. Some plants, like hyacinths, pansies, daisies, crocuses and forget-me-nots blossom early in April; while others, like gladioluses, dahlias, black-eyed Susan and asters bloom in late August or September. You can fill the months in between with narcissuses (May), peonies/carnations/poppies (June), and irises/lilies/hand bells/petunias/delphiniums (July). Read on for more gardening advice to ensure you have year-round enjoyment.

There are many vegetables that can be harvested in the wintertime. Parsley survives from May through November. From June through November, you can harvest broccoli, chard and kale. Beets can even be harvested into December and potatoes can be dug up from July into December.

If this is your second year of producing garden plants, then it's important that you plant your winter vegetable crops in a different location than last year. Planting in the same spot every year weakens the soil, loses nutrients and attracts insects or disease. A gardening expert may also recommend that you use cover crops to build up damaged or idle soil. By planting fast-growing greens, you can spade, plow or till them into the soil for added green organic matter and nutrients. In the fall, you can sow alfalfa, Austrian field peas, white clover, crimson clover, red clover, purple vetch, hairy vetch, woolly vetch, common vetch, fava beans, wheat, oats, cereal rye, winter rape, and lupines. If you'd like to cover in the winter, try cow-peas (Southern peas), hairy indigo, bell beans (a small fava bean) Lana vetch, winter peas, lupines, and purple clover.

To help your garden plants withstand colder temperatures, you should mulch well (about 4 inches deep) in the fall. Reduce watering a month or so before the first frost to prevent over-saturation. After a few hard freezes, you should then water well to provide moisture to help the plants go dormant.

The Ed Hume Seeds gardening blog recommends building windbreaks and walls to add 10 to 15 degrees of warmth to your garden. Similarly, permanently edged raised beds with well-made soil can increase the temperature between 8 and 12 degrees. Cloches (portable greenhouses made of cloth, glass panes or pop bottles) can increase the solar energy, although they must be properly ventilated and firmly secured. Cold frame boxes made of old 18 x 12 window sashes and glass are more permanent structures that protect from strong winds, elevate temperatures and protect flowers and veggies from frost; these boxes can also allow you to seed up to 8 weeks earlier than usual. Hot beds (cold frames with electric heating cables to provide bottom heat) can keep a garden frost-free all winter long.

Whether you're into vegetable garden plants or perennial flower gardening, these tips should help you create a beautiful and productive winter ensemble. Flowers in a winter garden can excitement and wonderment to your yard.
