Concepts Of Fiber Optics Transmission

By Scott Rodgers

Fiber optics is basically a technology that uses thin and hollow glass threads in order to transmit data. Fiber optic cable is one that consists of large number of cables and each single cable is capable of transmitting large amount of messages. Fiber optics is the most advanced technology that is used to transmit data from one place to another.

The information that is to be send is optically modulated and is then send via total internal reflection. In optical modulation the data is superimposed on a light carrier thus making the data digital in nature. When this data which is now converted into a ray of light enters into a rare medium with incidence angle more than critical angle, total internal reflection takes place. This way the beam of light travels into those thin glass strands.

Fiber optic cables offer you almost unlimited and unique advantages over all previously developed transmission media. The first and foremost advantage of this technology is its digital nature that makes it an ideal medium for communication.

Telephone lines that comes to your home are also made up of fiber cables because the signal remains undistorted at the receiver's end. The signal does not attenuate, thus possessing a complete signal strength. Electromagnetic interference and radio frequency interference do not degrade its performance. The data carrying capacity of optical fibers is also more than the traditional systems.

Optical fibers are least affected by temperature variations and the bit error rate is also less as compared to copper wires. So these are secure and has increased data transmission rates and reduced the costs.

You can even decorate you home using optical fibers. Objects like light lamps which are made up of fiber optics are used for home decoration. Digital cameras use optical fibers because of their flexible attributes. Optical cables require less space and are not at all bulky as the traditional transmission media such as copper wires. They have a very small diameter even less than that of a human hair.

They are light weight which makes them portable and consumes less space on the ground. They are less expensive as compared to copper cables and this is mainly because they are made up of glass which in turn is made up of sand.

All these qualities make fiber optics the highest speed communication system. Advantages outlined above supports its use in almost every field. They are mainly applicable in telecommunications and computer networks. They are also used for medicinal purposes for inspecting the inside of a body. Plumbers are these days using this technology for fixing the damaged sewer lines.
